Home is Where the Hatred Is

On Thursday, April 27th Michael Gillespie will deliver a talk at City College entitled, “Home is Where the Hatred Is: Film Blackness and the Politics of Black Becoming”.  The talk will take place in the Rifkind Room, NAC 6/316 from 12:30 – 2:00 PM.

The talk focuses on two recent films that demonstrate a rich and necessary complication of the idea of black film.  Anna Rose Holmer’s “The Fits (2015)” and Frances Bodomo’s “Everybody Dies! (2016)” collectively compel radical and innovative enactments of narrative, aesthetics, and historiography.  The talk will consider the stakes of each film in the terms of film blackness, a critical measure of cinema’s place in black visual and expressive culture.

Michael Gillespie is Associate Professor of Film, Department of Media and Communication Arts and the Black Studies Program at City College.
